In a recent mission to Nias, our team witnessed the power of God moving in unexpected and incredible ways. While the initial plan was to focus on equipping pastors and leaders, an opportunity arose to teach English at a local high school—an assignment that at first seemed outside the core mission. However, what began with hesitation quickly became one of the most impactful parts of the trip.
At the school, one student initially hesitated to serve as a translator but, with encouragement and support, grew into a confident interpreter. By the end of the mission, she was boldly sharing the Gospel alongside the team in front of hundreds of students at local high schools and churches. Watching her step into her God-given gifts and embrace her calling was a powerful reminder of how God works in unexpected ways.
Another key moment of connection was with the pastor’s wife, whose determination to learn English became a daily source of joy. Despite knowing only a few words at first, she embraced learning through songs, often turning meal times and motorcycle rides into lively language lessons filled with laughter and worship. These moments of genuine relationship-building highlighted how education, even in small ways, can create bridges of understanding and encouragement.
Beyond the school, deeper connections were built within the community. Since few Westerners visit this region, the willingness of our team to stay with local families, shop at markets, and teach English in everyday settings—front yards, kitchens, and meal tables—helped build trust and strengthen relationships. These bonds became the heart of the ministry in Nias, ensuring that the work continues to support local pastors and leaders long after the visit.
To conclude the time in Nias, the team joined Malaysian pastors and an Australian partner for two weeks of intensive ministry. Together, they had the privilege of sharing the Gospel with over 2,000 high school students. In addition to witnessing young people respond to God’s love, each evening brought services where God moved in extraordinary ways—bodies healed, hearts transformed, and faith strengthened.
One particularly powerful moment was praying for a man who had been unable to walk or move his arms for four years due to a severe stroke. By the end of the night, he was not only walking but dancing down the aisle, praising God for his healing. The joy on his face was a profound testament to God’s power and love for His people.
This mission to Nias was a reminder that God’s plans often go beyond our expectations. Through education, relationship-building, and the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, lives were transformed, and seeds of faith were planted that will continue to grow in the years to come. |
